FROM CULTURE TO QUESTION

A free-living cell
that divides within.

Chromosphaera perkinsii is the only cultured free-living representative of its ichthyosporean lineage. It was isolated, described and first sequenced through a collaborative effort involving Multicellgenome. A striking laboratory observation of its palintomic division opened an experimental line of research into how a single cell can generate many daughters in a coordinated sequence—now developed further by other laboratories.
